Student Assessment in Pre-Calculus



We will be using a variety of assessment strategies, whether it be the regular tests, quizzes, assignments and homework, or other creative manners through with can demonstrate your mastery of skills/concepts (i.e. model building, producing videos/movies, teaching peers, etc ...) Your evaluation throughout the course will be comprised of following components:



The percentage grade you earn in SEMESTER 1 of the course is comprised of the following:


Tests & Quizzes

Major assessments are usually the summative unit tests that take place at the end of each major unit and evaluate students' understanding of a wide range of concepts learned over a period of 4-6 weeks.

Minor assessments are usually quizzes that occur within a unit and evaluate students' understanding of a narrower range of concepts learned over a period of several weeks.


70% of pre-exam grade (but actually 56% of FINAL SEMESTER GRADE)

Assignments

Assignments will range in degrees of complexity and time commitments. Daily assignments happen within the time frame of ONE CLASS PERIOD. Weekly assignments happen within the time frame of ONE WEEK. Extended assignments happen within the time frame of several weeks/one month. These written assignments are given so that the students gain experience in performing and writing about mathematical investigations and modeling tasks


20% of pre-exam grade (but actually 16% of FINAL SEMESTER GRADE)

Homework

Homework tasks are designed to practice concepts learned in recent lessons. Since mistakes are considered to be an important part of the learning process, homework tasks are graded on completion and effort rather than the accuracy of the work.


10% of pre-exam grade (but actually 8% of FINAL SEMESTER GRADE)

Semester Exam

A cumulative final exam is given to assess mastery of all topics studied over the course of the semester
